FUN HOME

FUN HOME at Lee Street Theatre in Salisbury, NC. Using the original graphic novel as inspiration, the lighting design worked to replicate the blue-grey color palate in Alison Bechdel’s drawings. The design served as a directing force to draw audience attention to onstage action by utilizing isolation and fluid transitions to mimic the feeling of reading panels in a comic book. Produced curing the COVID-29 pandemic, special attention was needed to light around actor PPE while driving the storyline. Direction by Rod Oden, Music Direction by Laurie Klaus, Choreography by Kristen Swilley, Scenic Design by David Pulliam, Costume Design by Beth Bentley, Sound Design by Rod Oden, Photos by Tim Coffey.

CLUE ON STAGE

Clue On Stage at Lee Street Theatre in Salisbury, NC. The lighting design recalls the imagery of the classic board game Clue. The use of strong color choices as thematic representation for each character and the use of ‘shadowy’ side light evokes the mysterious, quirky nature of the production. Produced curing the COVID-29 pandemic, special attention was needed to light around actor PPE while driving the storyline. Lighting Design by Caleb S. Garner, Sound Design by Rod Oden, Costume Design by Davita Galloway, Scenic Design by David Carmichael, Direction by Rod Oden, and Photography by Tim Coffey.

GUYS AND DOLLS

GUYS AND DOLLS in the Tatum Theatre at The University of Southern Mississippi. Rather than a traditional, massive production of Guys and Dolls, the design team came to the conclusion to produce a smaller scale ‘chamber’ production – focusing on the poetry and meaning of the music and lyrics. The lighting design shaped the world of the play by taking the most romantic elements of the literal settings and using them to suggest the locations in a whimsical pastiche of New York City. Ranging from textured, angular city streets to plain, clean mission interiors, the design of Guys and Dolls helps to ask whether it is better to follow the fold or to take the gamble. Direction by Lou Rackoff, Scenic Design by Lindsey Kelley, Costume Design by Mackenzie Dunn, Photos by Kelly Dunn.

KEN LUDWIG’S THE THREE MUSKETEERS

KEN LUDWIG’S THE THREE MUSKETEERS in the Tatum Theatre at The University of Southern Mississippi. The primary goal of the lighting design was to tell the story through a series of tableaux, as if the audience was watching the pages of a story book come to life.  By using exaggerated highlight and shadow with bold color and texture choices, I emphasized the drama and emotional intensity of the stage pictures in order to make a tableau as moving as a romantic painting. As The Three Musketeers jumps from scene to scene with the same level of heroism and conviction, the lighting design had to illustrate the romantic extremes of good and evil. Direction by Shannon Bain, Scenic design by Amanda Klipsch, Costume Design by J. Theresa Bush, Photos by Kelly Dunn.

CABARET

CABARET in the Tatum Theatre at The University of Southern Mississippi. Rather than a traditional setting of Cabaret, the director and design team chose to set our production in a gritty, back alley Weimar Kabaret – telling the stories of real people in real places in real circumstances. The design had an arc beginning with big, bright, and colorful looks at the Kit Kat Club to the stark, desolate, gritty looks of Berlin on the verge of war. As conditions in Berlin worsen, the color of the light bleached - signifying the blatant destruction of European art and culture. Direction by Lou Rackoff, Scenic Design by Stephen Judd, Costume Design by Erin Jester, Sound Design by Tiffany Nabors, Photos by Kelly Dunn.

YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU

YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU in the Tatum Theatre at The University of Southern Mississippi. The concept was to create a dynamic world of the play; one that can both capture the frenzied nature of the Vanderhoff household in contrast to the stoic, restrained demeanor of the Kirby family while also being able to produce charming, intimate moments, all while balancing the costume and scenic variety of design. Direction by Burton Tedesco, Scenic Design by Lindsey Kelley and Stephen Judd, costume design by Mackenzie Dunn, Sound Design by Tracy Ratcliff.

GODSPELL

GODSPELL at Catawba College's Hedrick Little Theatre, produced by the Catawba College Theatre Arts Department. The lighting was presentational and very reminiscent of Rock and Roll lighting to create a sense of awe and active engagement. Direction by Joe Hernandez, Music Direction by John Stafford, Costume Design by Erin Dougherty, Scenic Design by David Pulliam.

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK at the Lee Street Theatre Performing Arts Center in the Tom & Martha Smith Event Center, produced by the St. Thomas Players. Direction by Claudia Gallup, Costume Design by Nancy Gaines, Scenic Design by Larissa Garcia, Photos by Caitlin Billings.

TITANIC: A NEW MUSICAL

TITANIC: A NEW MUSICAL in the Jack Romano Playhouse, produced by Stage Manor Performing Arts Center.
